There are many approaches that have proven useful in the treatment of mental and behavioral disturbances, and relational issues. There is no single approach that works for everyone. My collaborative approach to treating behavioral and mental health issues is based on a combination of three essential elements: (1) the best scientific evidence, (2) clinical expertise based on over thirty-years of practice, and (3) each patient’s preferences based on there values and beliefs.
Malcolm Gladwell writes in his book Blink that to become an expert in any field requires approximately 10,000 hours engaging in that activity and also receiving feedback so you can correct your errors rather than repeat them. Along these lines, I have videotaped and reviewed with peers hundreds of hours of videotape to discern what works and with whom it works most effectively. My clinical work has been featured in two videotapes produced for professionals by the American Psychological Association. I have published extensively in the field and have received numerous awards for my contributions to clinical science and psychotherapy. My approach to treating mental and behavioral disturbances is based on a unified theory of clinical science and psychotherapy, which incorporates methods, techniques and relational principles from an array of treatment approaches and modalities.
I have trained in and personally experienced a number of approaches and take what is beneficial from many approaches. I have conducted over 30,000 sessions of psychotherapy over the course of three-decades and am trained and certified in many modalities. My efforts over the years has been to find the best available strategies to help individuals, couples, and families make the enduring changes that they seek leading to more abundant, satisfied, and productive lives, evident in both self and other relationships.
Treatment begins with an initial evaluation to review your concerns, gather pertinent history, and formulate a working treatment plan, which includes modalities of treatment, type of approach, and activities to pursue outside of the consulting room to enhance the process. Each person responds to treatment in a different fashion and we will monitor this as we proceed and if what we are doing is not working we will re-evaluate and determine what changes need to be made to optimize outcome.
At times, there may be a need to seek additional modalities of treatment which may enhance the therapeutic effect such as medication or other forms of intervention is achieved in collaboration with other trusted health professionals.
After the initial evaluation and over the course of treatment, it may be helpful to add other treatment components, evaluations, or experiences that will optimize your experience and achieve better results. We collaborate with a number of medical, behavioral, physical, and adjunctive treatment providers. We will work in conjunction with other providers to coordinate your care and achieve your treatment goals. Some of the following may be recommended:
